Medical Guidelines for Psilocybin Mushrooms

Important Disclaimer:

We are not doctors or medical professionals, and we do not provide medical advice. Please consult with your physician for any medically-related questions or concerns. Below are some general guidelines based on current research, intended for educational purposes only.

Introduction:

Compared to other entheogens like Ayahuasca and Bufo (5-MeO-DMT), psilocybin mushrooms generally have fewer contraindications, making them one of the more accessible options for those seeking these methods. When used in a sacred and therapeutic setting, psilocybin can offer profound healing and transformative experiences. However, it's important to be aware of the potential risks and approach its use with care and respect. Below are some guidelines to help ensure a safe and meaningful experience.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Mental Health: Individuals with a personal or family history of severe mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, should be cautious with psilocybin, as it may trigger or worsen symptoms. However, if you feel called to sit in ceremony with us but are unsure about your mental health status, please still apply. Our screening committee will work with you lovingly to find the best path forward. While psilocybin has shown promise in improving mental health for many—which is often one of the primary reasons people seek these retreats and experience profound healing—it’s essential to approach its use with care to ensure that it supports your healing journey without causing harm.

Physical Health: Psilocybin can affect blood pressure and heart rate, so those with cardiovascular issues should consult a doctor before considering its use.

MEDICATIONS

Antidepressants and SSRIs: Some medications, especially antidepressants, can interact with psilocybin, potentially reducing its effectiveness or increasing the risk of adverse effects.

Other Medications: Always discuss with a healthcare provider before combining psilocybin with any medication.

SET AND SETTING

Mindset (Set): Enter the experience with a clear intention and positive mindset. Psilocybin experiences can be intense, so it's important to be mentally prepared. This is why we provide preparation guidelines and resources prior to our retreats.

Environment (Setting): Use psilocybin in a safe, comfortable, and controlled environment, preferably with a trusted guide or facilitator present. This is the purpose of our ceremonies here at Agape.

DOSAGE

Start Low: Beginners should start with a low dose to gauge their sensitivity and response. Dosage varies depending on the form of mushrooms, so understanding the potency is key. With that said, at our retreats we work with you to determine the best dose based on your unique circumstances. Please note that the intention of these retreats is to have an experience, and we serve "therapeutic" doses intended for you to go deep. This may be a higher dose than a typical recreational experience.

Gradual Increase: If necessary, dosage can be gradually increased in subsequent sessions under the guidance of an experienced facilitator.

INTEGRATION

Post-Experience Reflection: After the experience, take time to reflect on and integrate the insights gained. Journaling, talking with a guide, or participating in integration circles can be helpful. This is why we stress integration as a vital part of your journey and provide resources and guidance for your post-retreat re-entry into daily living.

LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS

Know the Law: Psilocybin is illegal in many places. Ensure you are aware of the legal status in your area before participating in any psilocybin-related activities. If you partake in an Agape ceremony, rest assured, this experience is 100% legal. Our ceremonies are protected by the Supreme Court. Read more about our legality here.

PHYSICAL SAFETY

Stay Hydrated: Drink water before and after the experience, but avoid over-hydration during the session.

Avoid Operating Machinery: Do not drive or operate heavy machinery under the influence of psilocybin. Hopefully this should be an understatement, but we hold onto your keys during your retreat weekend, just in case.
