Medical Guidelines for Bufo (5-MeO-DMT)

Introduction:

Bufo 5-MeO-DMT, also known as the "God molecule," is a powerful psychedelic substance derived from the secretions of the Bufo Alvarius toad. Compared to other entheogens, Bufo 5-MeO-DMT is known for its intense, short-lasting experiences that can lead to profound insights and a deep sense of unity. While it has shown potential for spiritual and therapeutic breakthroughs, it is essential to approach its use with caution and awareness of potential risks.

Note about Medications & Substances:

Some of the substances, herbs, medications, and supplements listed below cannot be combined with DMT during the ceremony, but are generally safe outside of the ceremony. Others, however, must be avoided for days, weeks, or even months before and after the ceremony to ensure your safety and the integrity of your experience. Please refer to your full prep guide for detailed timing, dosage considerations, and additional instructions. Following these guidelines carefully is the best way to meet the sacament safely and reverently.

  POSSIBLY CONTRAINDICATED MEDICATIONS, SUBSTANCES, CONDITIONS, AND HERBS

Medications That Must Be Discontinued:

​​​​Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)(Including β-carbolines and harmala alkaloids found in Ayahuasca and Syrian Rue)
These must never be combined with DMT or 5-MeO-DMT.


  • Harmine, Harmaline, Tetrahydroharmine (THH)
  • Ayahuasca, Syrian Rue
  • Moclobemide
  • Tranylcypromine
  • Phenelzine
  • Isocarboxazid
  • Selegiline
  • Methylene Blue (dye)
  • Linezolid (antibiotic)

CYP2D6 Inhibitors

These medications inhibit a liver enzyme critical for DMT metabolism
and may increase risk of toxicity or prolonged effects.


  • Paroxetine (Paxil)
  • Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
  • Quinidine
  • Cinacalcet
  • Fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Terbinafine
  • Mirabegron
  • Abiraterone
  • Lorcaserin
  • Amiodarone
  • Cimetidine
  • Escitalopram (Lexapro)
  • Fluvoxamine (Luvox)
  • Sertraline (Zoloft)
  • Celecoxib
  • Cobicistat
  • Clobazam
  • Labetalol
  • Ritonavir
  • Vemurafenib

Other Substances to Avoid:

Serotonergic Medications & Supplements

Can cause serotonin overload if combined with DMT.

  • SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, MAOIs
  • Buspirone
  • Lithium
  • 5-HTP or other serotonin precursors
 

Stimulants & Amphetamines

May dangerously raise heart rate and blood pressure when combined with DMT.

  • Amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse)
  • Methamphetamine
  • Cocaine
  • MDMA / MDA / PMA
  • Ephedrine / Pseudoephedrine
  • Diet pills or pre-workouts containing stimulants
 

CNS Depressants & Sedatives

Risk of sedation, respiratory depression, or interference with psychological safety.

  • Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin)
  • Barbiturates
  • Sleep aids (Ambien, Lunesta, etc.)
  • Opioids / Opiates (morphine, oxycodone, heroin, etc.)
  • Alcohol
 

Over-the-Counter Medications

Some OTC medications contain hidden serotonergic or stimulant ingredients.

  • Dextromethorphan (DXM) — cough/cold medicines
  • Pseudoephedrine / Phenylephrine — decongestants
  • Diphenhydramine — sleep or allergy meds (Benadryl, Tylenol PM, etc.)
 

Herbs & Supplements

Natural substances can still be dangerous with DMT.

  • St. John’s Wort
  • Kava
  • Kratom
  • Ephedra / Ma Huang
  • Yohimbe
  • Ginseng
  • 5-HTP, SAM-e, Rhodiola, Maca (in excess)
  • Any strong herbal stimulant
 

Other Psychedelics & Plant Sacraments

Do not combine DMT or 5-MeO-DMT with:

  • LSD, Mescaline, Psilocybin
  • 5-MeO-DMT (if using NN-DMT)
  • Ketamine
  • Iboga / Ibogaine
  • Cannabis (especially within 24–48 hours prior)

Cautionary Medical Conditions
If you have any of the following, please consult with us and your healthcare provider.

Cardiovascular

  • Arrhythmias
  • Heart failure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • History of heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Stroke or TIA
  • Bleeding or clotting disorders
  • Uncontrolled hypertension

Neurological

  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Tumors in the central nervous system

Psychiatric

  • Bipolar I disorder
  • Psychosis or history of psychotic episodes
  • Schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
  • Delusional or brief psychotic disorder
  • Borderline or antisocial personality disorder
  • Narcissistic personality disorder
  • Active substance use disorder
  • Active suicidality

Other Conditions

  • Severe respiratory illness
  • Liver or kidney failure
  • Terminal illness

These guidelines are not restrictions, but protective measures — allowing your body, mind, and spirit to meet the sacrament with clarity, reverence, and safety.
